What Is a Rebate Portal — and Why You Should Always Use One

Rebate portals like GCR and Frugal Flyer pay you extra cash just for applying through their link. Here's how they work and how to find the best one.

Every time you apply for a credit card, you're leaving money on the table if you go directly to the issuer's website. Rebate portals exist to fix that — and the extra cash is real.

What is a rebate portal?

A rebate portal is a website that has a referral arrangement with credit card issuers. When you apply for a card through the portal's link, the issuer pays the portal a commission. The portal then shares a portion of that commission with you as cash back.

The card terms are identical. You get the same welcome bonus, same annual fee, same everything. The only difference is that you get an extra $50–$200 deposited into your PayPal or bank account a few months after approval.

The main Canadian portals

Great Canadian Rebates (GCR) — The most established portal in Canada. Wide selection of cards, reliable payouts, and often the highest cash back on Amex products.

Frugal Flyer (FF) — Run by the Canadian travel points community. Frequently has the best rates on Scotiabank and TD cards. Also has excellent editorial content if you want to learn more about churning.

Credit Card Genius (CCG) — Focuses on card comparison but also has portal links. Good for RBC and CIBC products.

Finly Wealth (FW) — Newer entrant, worth checking for cards where the others are lower.

How much are we talking?

It varies by card and changes over time, but here are typical ranges:

  • Amex Platinum: $100–$150
  • Amex Cobalt: $75–$100
  • Scotiabank Passport VI: $100–$125
  • TD First Class: $75–$100

On a $699 annual fee card, getting $150 back via a portal meaningfully changes the math on whether the card is worth keeping for a second year.

How PointsBinder helps

This is exactly why we built the portal comparison into every card listing. Instead of checking 4 different portal websites, you can see the current best portal payout right on the card's page. One click takes you directly to the right link.

We update portal rates regularly. If you notice one is out of date, let us know.

The 60-second checklist before every application

  1. Find the card on PointsBinder
  2. Look at the portal comparison — pick the highest payout
  3. Click the portal link (not the issuer's direct link)
  4. Apply as normal
  5. Add the card to your dashboard to track your MSR

That's it. You just earned an extra $75–$150 for doing nothing differently.

Portal rates change frequently and may differ from what's shown. Always verify on the portal's site before applying.
