Scotiabank Gold American Express Review (2025)

A detailed review of the Scotia Gold Amex — the best no-fee-first-year card in Canada for dining and travel earn rates.

The Scotiabank Gold American Express Card is one of the most popular cards in Canada for good reason: it combines a strong welcome bonus, an exceptional dining earn rate, no foreign transaction fees, and a first-year fee waiver. Here's the full breakdown.

The basics

Annual fee: First year free (then $120) Welcome bonus: 30,000 Scene+ points after $2,000 in spend in 3 months Program: Scene+ Network: American Express Best portals: GCR ($150 back) or Frugal Flyer ($150 back) — both are tied at the top

Earn rates

This is where the Scotia Gold stands out:

  • 6x Scene+ at Sobeys, Safeway, IGA, Foodland, and other Sobeys-banner stores
  • 5x on dining, food delivery, and entertainment (restaurants, UberEats, movies, streaming)
  • 3x on gas, transit, and select streaming services
  • 1x everywhere else

The 5x on all dining — including food delivery and restaurants — is one of the best earn rates on any Canadian card at this fee level. If you spend $800/month on food (restaurants, groceries at non-Sobeys stores, delivery), you're earning 4,000 Scene+ points per month from that category alone.

No foreign transaction fees

This is the feature that makes the Scotia Gold uniquely valuable. Most Canadian credit cards charge a 2.5% fee on purchases made in foreign currencies. The Scotia Gold charges 0%.

If you travel internationally once or twice a year, or make frequent USD purchases online, this can save $100–200 annually compared to using a regular card.

The Scene+ program

Scene+ points can be redeemed for:

  • Movie tickets at Cineplex theatres (~$3/100 pts)
  • Travel bookings via the Scene+ travel portal (~1¢/pt)
  • Cash back at Sobeys/Safeway at checkout (~1¢/pt)
  • Gift cards and merchandise

For travel redemptions, the value is straightforward: 1 pt = 1¢, so 30,000 points = $300 toward a flight or hotel. Not the highest value vs. Aeroplan or MR transfers, but simple and predictable.

Travel insurance

The Scotia Gold includes:

  • Travel Medical Insurance ($1M, up to 25 days)
  • Trip Cancellation Insurance
  • Purchase Protection
  • Extended Warranty

It's not the most comprehensive package, but for a sub-$120 card it covers the essentials.

What it doesn't have

No lounge access. If you want airport lounges, you'll need a different card or a standalone Priority Pass membership.

The 30,000 Scene+ welcome bonus, while useful, isn't going to get you to Japan. For large international redemptions, a card that earns Aeroplan or Amex MR will go further.

Year one value calculation

  • Welcome bonus: 30,000 pts × 1¢ = $300
  • GCR portal cash back: $150
  • Annual fee year one: $0
  • Dining earn (assume $600/month × 5x = 3,000 pts/mo × 12 × 1¢): $360
  • No FX fee savings (assume $3,000 foreign spend × 2.5%): $75

Year one total: ~$885 in value

Who should get it

  • Anyone who eats out regularly or orders delivery
  • Travellers who make purchases in foreign currencies
  • People who shop at Sobeys-banner grocery stores
  • Beginners looking for a low-friction first travel card (FYF, low MSR)

Who should skip it

  • Aeroplan loyalists who want to consolidate points in one program
  • People who don't travel internationally and don't eat out much
  • Churners who have already claimed the Scotia Gold bonus

Bottom line: The Scotia Gold is one of the best first cards in Canada. The FYF offer, low MSR, no foreign fees, and strong dining earn rate make it a straightforward yes for most people. Apply via GCR or Frugal Flyer for an extra $150 on top.

Always verify current offer terms before applying.
